Propaganda
is used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of
view. Rhetoric is the art of effective or persuasive speaking or
writing. During WWII American’s were exposed to hundreds of propaganda poster’s,
most of them showed hatred for the axis powers and support for America's allies,
they persuaded people to save some of
their material so that more material could be used for the war effort and they encouraged
people to buy war bonds. “Propaganda was used to increase support for the war
and commitment to an Allied victory.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_propaganda_during_World_War_II)
Another way propaganda was used was to boost the patriotism in many Americans. It
helped people feel as if they were a part of the war almost like they were
doing the fighting in a sense. “Patriotism became the central theme of
advertising throughout the war, as large scale campaigns were launched to sell
war bonds, promote efficiency in factories, reduce ugly rumors, and maintain
civilian morale.”(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_propaganda_during_World_War_II)
Propaganda wasn't the only thing that helped boost the war effort because
propaganda and rhetoric go hand and hand.
During WWII you not only saw the images that posters had on them but you would see short phrases with things such as “Deliver us from evil”, “Buy War Bonds” and many more, by why is it that those phrases usually have a picture of small children playing or looking sad with Nazi signs on them? It’s because seeing the same message over and over again can cause us to be influenced subconsciously. “The persuasive element of visual rhetoric lies in its ability to instantly connect with our emotional mind before the rational part of the brain is signaled.” (http://library.umkc.edu/blog/speccoll/worldwar-poppen) Rhetoric advertisement can focus on specific emotions causing us to feel certain ways about things. “…emotions of dread and fear are conveyed to the viewer. There is also a strong desire to help the child in the center and a loathing felt towards the enemy.” (http://library.umkc.edu/blog/speccoll/worldwar-poppen) In conclusion propaganda along with rhetoric advertisement can have a very persuasive effect on the people that are exposed to it whether it is to promote people to buy certain items, boost patriotism or cause us to have a stronger hatred for the enemy they are a powerful and effective combination that is perfect for war fair.
